Raytheon Polar Services is the primary contractor for the National Science Foundation's (NSF) U.S. Antarctic Program. We are currently seeking Carpenter Apprentices to deploy to McMurdo or South Pole Antarctic research stations on a contract basis beginning in approximately August of 2010. this position deploys during the Austral Summer Season - Approximately August or October through February. We are looking for Primary and Alternate employees to fill all contract positions. The Primary is first in line for the position. The Alternate is next in line to deploy should the Primary be unable to meet deployment requirements. The Carpenter Apprentice is an apprentice of the carpentry trade. This position accomplishes carpentry work on maintenance and construction projects in Antarctica. The Carpenter Apprentice performs hands-on carpentry tasks on maintenance and construction projects in Antarctica to include rough framing and finish carpentry utilizing a variety of materials and tools. Duties Include: * Performs hands-on carpentry tasks on maintenance and construction projects as needed in Antarctica. * Performs rough framing, and finish carpentry utilizing a variety of materials and tools. * Advises Carpenter Foreman, Construction Coordinator or Construction Superintendent on job progress and material requirements. * Assists Carpenters with various carpentry tasks, as well as independently accomplishing carpentry tasks. * Complies with all RPSC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. * May perform construction related tasks in and around undeveloped and remote areas as well as in adverse conditions. * May be responsible for maintaining and updating inventory records and materials usage. * May be responsible for the coordination of materials and support from other departments. * May perform tasks requiring repeated heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, digging, hauling, standing, walking, kneeling, stooping and squatting. * May be required to work outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions. * Responsible for maintaining workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place. Required Experience - Minimum two years of documented experience in carpentry is required. - High school diploma or equivalent is required. Preferred Experience - Ability to read design drawings is preferred. - Experience including rough framing, finish carpentry and other phases of carpentry is preferred. - Experience accomplishing metal stud framing and drywall hanging and finishing is preferred. - Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is preferred. - Basic to advanced first aid training is preferred (particularly those candidates being considered for McMurdo Station). For the time you are in Antarctica compensation also includes travel to and from the ice, room & board, and you are eligible for a performance-based bonus upon successful completion of your contract.
